CounsellingSo why have counselling? Well have you ever put on a CD and all it does is go round and round but will not play. Sometimes that is what happens to people. Thoughts and feelings go round and round in our heads but we can't make much sense of anything. It is almost like we have got stuck and don't know how to move forward. Counselling can give us the opportunity to talk about how we feel in a safe and non judgemental environment, this in turn may help us find solutions to our problems, and also live our lives in a more resourceful and positive way. If you feel that there are things you need to talk about with someone who is skilled in helping people to find ways to move forward, then let us know and we can book you a time. Anyone who is looking to resolve problems, make difficult decisions, cope with a crisis, learn about themselves and work through feelings will benefit from counselling. Many people find the thought of counselling frightening. Some people think that counsellors are trained so that they can see what you are thinking and feeling. Some people think that a counsellor is like a psychiatrist, they are not. Counsellors cannot read your mind. Counselling is an opportunity to grow emotionally by finding out about yourself and how to deal with thoughts and feelings which crop up in every day life. Most young people who come to The Edge do so because they have a drug or alcohol concern. People use drugs for so many different reasons, but often people use substances to get away from the thoughts and feelings they are experiencing. Things might be difficult at school, college, home; there might be family problems or problems with friends. If we have difficulties going on in our lives, we are more likely to use drugs or alcohol to escape from them. But if we work through these problems, it can help us to have more control over our drug or alcohol use, |
