Outreach

Outreach is the part of The Edge where we... well, we "Reach-out". This means that even though we have the office at the Waterside Youth and Community Centre, we also do work in lots of other different places. This means that we can see as many young people as possible throughout West Berkshire. There are 2 main parts to our outreach programme: streetwork; and work with groups.

Our streetwork programme goes from March to October (when the clocks are forward and hour) and we go out to area of West Berkshire where we know young people hang out. We go out there to say hello, and we often take activities out with us, relating to drugs education. Young people will often find this to be quite an interesting experience, as they can talk to an adult about drugs and alcohol, without being worried about being told off or lectured at or anything. Plus, it can get quite boring just hanging around in Newbury, so a lot of the time, they're just glad for something to do!

The work we do with groups takes place in the West Berkshire Pupil Referral Units (PRU's), the YMCA and with Newbury College. This means we can see people who might not be in school, or who may not get to see us by any other way. The stuff we do is all about drug education and making sure people have the right knowledge so they can make the right choices.
